When it comes to equipment , running
is a simple sport- regardless of whether your training for a 5K or a marathon.
Generally all that’s needed are the
right clothes and more importantly a good pair of running shoes.
But just how long does a quality
pair of running kicks last and how do you know when its time to purchase a new
pair. (Hint – Don’t ask Forest Gump)
Did you know when the Greeks ran
foot races in the olden days, they usually did so barefoot and naked? Since
then running with clothes and shoes has become more of the normal thing to do!
( Phew! ).
Running shoes are all developed to
be protective and add traction. Running shoes have evolved to incorporate
lightweight materials that cushion the foot from trauma of running.
Like all things in life, they wear
out and once the foam wears out in your shoes, you then risk the chance of
overuse injuries, because the material can no longer absorb shock. The best way
to avoid these issues is to regularly trade in your old shoes for new kicks.
According to some researches running
shoes should be replaced every 450 – 600 km, so just think- if you run 10km, 3
times a week based on the 450 km replacement. You should only run 45 times in
runners until new ones are needed.
You should pay attention to your
aches and pains and also compare your new shoes with old ones. Trying on an old
pair of shoes immediately before trying on a new pair gives you the runner a
direct comparison of which feels better and I can assure you it will be the
newer pair.
Another little test is the press
test, place your thumb in your shoe directly where the middle of your heal
would sit, if it is tough and there is no cushioning- it’s time for a new pair!
For me, buying new runners gives me more motivation to get out there and run.
Remember, the feeling you get from a
good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting around wishing you
were running!
